Biodiesel
is an efficient and environmentally friendly
alternative for fossil fuels. It is called
„Bio“ due to the production from
high quality plant oils.
Biodiesel
is the most common biofuel in Germany. It
is mainly produced from rape seed oil, but
also other plant and waste oils can be used
for biodiesel production.
These oils
are chemically treated using the so-called
transesterification process which changes
the molecular structure of the oil. The final
product is biodiesel which is also called
rapeseedmethylester (RME) in case it is produced
from rapeseed oil. In general, properties
of biodiesel are similar to the properties
of fossil diesel.
A valuable
co-product of biodiesel production is glyzerine
which can be used in the chemical industry
or as energy source.
